Ceramic staple repairs were done in the days when the available adhesives weren’t up to the job of holding together ceramic objects, especially larger ones like decorative plates and bowls.

To repair ceramics with staples, small holes are drilled in to the piece and then the staples are inserted. Typically, the stapling would be done on the less visible side of the ceramic object (inside a vase, on the back of a plate). Then any holes or spaces left in the crack might be filled with a mix of animal or plant glue with plaster or clay dust either colored or painted over to make the repair less obvious.

It’s a nice reminder of how scarce objects used to be, and how precious the flash of color that a bright clay dish or bowl must have been, before the easy light of the electric age!
